Why somatic practices are important for healing

Updated: Apr 4

In order to create long lasting change we need to work on creating holistic change that involves the whole body in the process. We experience life through our whole body, our whole being, and all of our senses. It makes sense in order to override the patterns we have had in the past and to create new ones that we should be using our whole bodies in when working on ourselves therapeutically to create change in our lives and relationships. Specifically we should get used to listening to our body and being in touch with the feelings, emotions, thoughts, and sensitivities it carries. While simply talking about what is going on for us can be helpful in order to raise awareness, to create the changes we'd like to see in an integrated way we need somatic practices. The somatic practices I am referring to are free movement / dance, breathwork, yoga, and expressive arts like drawing, writing, music making, walking in nature, anything allows you to connect to your body and engage your creativity. These practices also allow us the opportunity to see a glimpse into our subconscious mind - the part of psyche that is determining many of our beliefs and actions. These are our deeper generally unconscious experiences, ideas, beliefs, and stories we tell ourselves about ourselves and our world. We can do these practices on our own, but if we are working through things that feel too big or too much for us to carry alone its important to work with a skilled somatic practitioner and with someone who feels resonant and safe to you. If you want to try out a somatic session feel free to reach out for a free 15 min consultation.
